The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effects of an eight-session psychological treatment based on five core modules and three additional modules of a unified, transdiagnostic treatment protocol (UP) developed by Barlow et al. (2011) for Korean participants diagnosed with various anxiety and depressive disorders. Participants were undergraduate students with at least one DSM-5 diagnosis of social anxiety disorder, major depressive disorder, persistent depressive disorder, generalized anxiety disorder, and other anxiety-related disorders. Eighteen participants who received UP individual treatment and 15 those in the wait-list control (WLC) condition completed outcome assessments at pre- and posttreatment and 3-month follow-up. The UP resulted in significant improvement on the measures of social anxiety, generalized anxiety, depression, clinical anxiety symptoms, negative affect, and clinical severity rating of a principal diagnosis both at posttreatment and at a follow-up. Participants in the UP condition showed a large effect and a medium to large effect from pretreatment to follow-up on the measures of panic disorder severity and impairment in daily functioning, respectively. In contrast, participants in the WLC condition showed little or small changes on most outcome measures. Participants in the UP condition evidenced greater clinically significant change, indexed by the proportions of those who no longer met criteria for a principal diagnosis and achieved treatment responder status and high end-state functioning at post-treatment and follow-up, relative to those in the WLC condition. In conclusion, these results suggest that an eight-session UP treatment is effective for Korean undergraduate students with various anxiety and depressive disorders, and provide support for the clinical applicability of a transdiagnostic treatment to emotional disorders in Korea.
